Members of BODA are invited to the BOC Classic Car Summer BBQ

Nick and Sarah Allen have again kindly offered us the use of their wonderful courtyard home for a CLASSIC CAR SUMMER BBQ on Sunday 24th August from 12.30pm at Watershed, Smock Alley, West Chiltington, Pulborough, West Sussex. RH20 2QX.  This is the 13th gathering they’ve hosted at Watershed over the August bank holiday weekend for Bristol and Bristol engined cars.

We would really prefer people come in their Bristol’s or other classic machinery and drive them right up to the house as we will park them all together where possible.

There are a number of local hostelries / BnB’s in the immediate locality for those who wish to stay overnight on the Saturday and /or Sunday nights, and for those wishing to stay on the evening of Saturday 23rd there will be a table organised at The White Lion Inn, Thakeham for dinner. This will need to be booked well in advance so please confirm you’d like a place ASAP. A deposit will be required and the menu is to follow.

The proposed Sunday BBQ menu will be:

Starter:

Sarah’s home grown garden salad with either baked goats cheese or smoked salmon with a lemon/vinaigrette dressing accompanied by a glass of champagne.

Main course:

BBQ Rolled Rib of Beef and “jerk” chicken with potato mayonnaise and seasonal vegetables. (Vegetarian option available on request)

Pudding:

Fresh fruit salad with cream

Assorted cheese board with Nick’s own home made sourdough bread.

There will be appropriate wines from The Wine Society, beer, orange juice and mineral water.

This will be a dog friendly event.

Ps – Advance warning ——Quite a few wedding venues have sprung up locally so anyone planning to stay either the Saturday or Sunday nights would be well advise to book sooner rather than later !

Nick and Sarah are both designer/artists who work on large scale projects from their home.

Sunday 24th August – BBQ lunch at Watershed followed by supper for late night revelers (Sausages, cheese, wine or beer)  (£65.00 per person or £55.00 if not staying late)

We have managed to keep the prices the same as last year. The organisers feel that they would enjoy the event better if they didn’t have to do all the work themselves so we are employing a couple of local people to help serve and wash up etc.

The BBQ on Sunday will start as usual about 12.30 and continue with the supper until the last stragglers have left!

Payment must be made in advance to:

Lloyds Bank

Lytham Hall’s Autumn Classic Vehicle Show

The show will be open to all Classic Vehicle owners and we are very deliberately interpreting the term “Classic” loosely. Last year we had cars ranging from Pre-1930 vintage cars to modern supercars, from AC’s to Wolseleys.
Lytham Hall is the finest Georgian House in Lancashire – once the ancestral home of the colourful Clifton family – and has featured on “Antiques Road Show”. It is set in 80 acres of parkland about 1 mile from the town centre of Lytham itself. There are three floors with over twenty rooms, providing an insight into a fascinating past, which can be explore at your own pace.
We are told there will be ample on-site catering facilities and close proximity to the town centre offers the opportunity to enjoy all that “The Opal of the West” has to offer. For those wishing to make a weekend of it, there are numerous shops, restaurants, cafes and hotels nearby.

The show will be open to all eligible cars on a first-come first-served basis. Trade Stands will be in attendance.
The entry cost is a very reasonable £5 per car.
This cost covers show entry for the vehicle, driver and passengers – and includes a voucher allowing you to purchase two discounted tickets for hall entrance at £5 per person – normal price £9.50.

AINTREE RACECOURSE GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT LAPS AND DINNER

To mark 70 years since the first win of a British Grand Prix by a British man, Stirling Moss, at Aintree on 16th July 1955. This was also Stirling’s first ever Grand Prix win. Stirling drove a Mercedes W196, narrowly and controversially beating his teammate Fangio into second place. Students of history will know this race was the last for the Mercedes Team for over 30 years coming as it did straight after the disaster at Le-Mans in June. To mark the event the Aintree Circuit Club have invited BODA to take part in the commemorations. We will be permitted parade laps of the (still intact) circuit before enjoying a private dinner in the circuit facilities, better known these days for horse racing.
For those travelling some distance there are plenty of hotels nearby to suit all budgets. You could make a weekend of it and see some of Liverpool’s many tourist attractions.
Expected timings are:
17:30 – Guests Arrival at Aintree Circuit
Sign on/wristbands/decals…drinks reception.
17:45 – Drivers briefing for race car demo drivers
18:00 – 18:40 RACE CAR PARADES
Period and contemporary race car demonstrations on the Historic Grand Prix Circuit using the start/finish straight.
18:45 – Drivers briefing for parade cars lapping full GP Circuit
19:00 – 19:45 ROAD CAR PARADES
19:00 – Cars line up on start grid in front of stands followed by controlled laps of full GP circuit. Grid order determined by age of cars
19:45 – GP Circuit closes for laps.
Drivers/Guests return to Princess Royal Suite at Aintree overlooking the race circuit
20:15 – 3 course dinner served – Formal entrance by The Mayor of Sefton as Special Guest.

The Aintree Circuit Club are catering for around 100 hundred guests/participants. We are hoping BODA can take one or two tables at the event. This is an entirely private event, there is no public admission.
The ticket price is £99 per participant (a driver plus guest would require two tickets) to attend the event and the opportunity to drive the full Grand Prix circuit plus the reception and private dinner. Dress code will be smart casual or lounge suits.
All Bristol cars are welcome but If anyone has a 1955 Bristol or Bristol engined car especially race cars these will be given the highest priority.
The Aintree Circuit Club are running the event under a Motorsport UK Permit (Touring Assembly/Procession for Historical Purposes).
Please can you now confirm with Michael Barton and we can then confirm payment and tickets.

BOHT News

As the Trust’s volunteers sort, collate and catalogue the records that are now in storage at the BOHT workroom (office?) in the conservation hanger at Aerospace Bristol and two storage units a short distance away on the other side of the A38, a fair quantity of surplus documents are being found most of which are unused but show signs of having been stored for many, many years.

In order to generate income to support the Trust in its stated aims surplus items from the archive are being offered for sale.  Disposal of these surplus items will not deprive the archive of any examples of documents, drawings, specifications, brochures or ephemera.  After all, does the Trust need to find space for dozens of, say, road test reprints or model brochures when these could be of interest to those who own or have an interest in Bristols?

Items that are available include sales brochures for Types 404, 405, 407 (in French) 408, 409, 410, 411 S1 & 2, 411 S3, 603, 603 S2 and the Blenheim, reprints of contemporary road test reports, a Bristol Cars 407 specification, various flyers, advertising material, production jobs cards, unused commercial documents and other ephemera.

If you are interested in obtaining surplus items from the archive, please send an e-mail to mjcm4p@gmail.com

The latest price list is below:

As the Trust works its way through the records of Bristol Cars Limited, rarer and more interesting car- and company-related items can be made available and revised price lists provided.
