SPRING DINNER 2018 – Wales
/in Event reports, News/by BristolODAThe Spring Dinner 2018 has been organised by Mike Murray who kindly offered to run the event. The Dinner will be held at the White Waters Hotel, Llangollen. The proposed dates are 6th-7th April 2018. The itinerary will vary depending on the distance one has to travel, however, it is anticipated that there will be a group dinner on the evening of Friday 6th, various visits to local attractions on Saturday 7th April with, possibly, a speaker for our Spring dinner on Saturday evening then leaving at your leisure on Sunday.
The activities in the area are many and varied. For example:-
- Visit to Portmeirion (of the TV series ‘The Prisoner’ fame)
via views of Bala Lake
- Walk across Thomas Telford’s aqueduct, now a UNESCO World Heritage site
- A trip on the Heritage steam train
- A white water rafting trip down the River Dee
- A horse drawn narrow boat ride along the canal
- Play 18 holes at Llangollen Golf Club
- Climb to the top of Castell Dinas Bran, a 12th century hill fort
- Walk across the medieval bridge, one of the Seven Wonders of Wales
- Visit Gales, Wales’ oldest wine bar
- Enjoy the shops and galleries of Llangollen
- Visit Plas Newydd, a National Trust house and gardens
The predicted costs are £99.95 per room (including full cooked breakfast) for Friday 6 April and £105.95 per room for Saturday 7 April. A 3 course group dinner will be £24.85 per person, not including drinks. A detailed menu will follow nearer the time. A segregated parking area has also been arranged.
The details are not yet finalised but an expression of interest would be greatly appreciated. Please email: mgdmurray@aol.com.
Currently, Mike has reserved 10 double rooms with more available but, as with all popular locations, they do get booked up so a speedy response would be appreciated.
The Committee are asking for volunteers to put forward events in their locality. This ensures we get a change of venues and can take advantage of their local knowledge.
411 wiring diagram.
/in 411, Electrical, V8 cars/by BristolODAI have thought that there was no specific wiring diagram for the 411 in club circulation and have had to make do with the 410 version.
However, by accident I came across the 411 wiring diagram which is appended to the 411 owners manual that can be found here. Alternately you can find the 411 owners manual via the menu system of the website under “literature”. Of course you do need to be a BODA member to see this otherwise hidden content.
I hope other members find this useful.

Take off one complete set of bearings (2 sets of bearings per hub; the inner bearing is usually larger than the outer; both will be tapered roller bearings) and find yourself a local machine tool service company. Take your bearings in and they will measure them while you wait (about 5 minutes). There are 3 grades of bearings used classed A, B and C. The tolerances in manufacture are, of course, extremely tight so they employ an automatic grading system – A being the best and that’s what you want. C are the poorest and probably go into washing machines and the like. I think the classification system may have changed possibly 1 – 3. If the numbers on the bearings are visible you should be able to quote these to any bearing company and avoid the need to go to a machine tool service company.
Valid at time of writing in October 2016:
There are a number of good bearing suppliers eg Seager Bearings, Kings Heath, Birmingham (0121 444 5391) who will supply at trade prices.

Bristol 603 Manual
/in 603/by Mike MurrayHi Mike
If you follow the literature tab on this site you’ll find the 603 drivers handbook. The nearest you’ll get to a workshop manual is the one for the 407 but little changed between the 407 and 603.
Best wishes
Michael Barton
Hi Everyone
Just wondering if a Bristol 603 manual exists?
If so, can I purchase one, or get one photo copied?
Any information would be appreciated.
Regards
Mike
BODA Valuation Service
/in Valuations/by BristolODA
With record prices being noted for Bristol cars in the Auction room recently BODA members should be looking at their insurance company agreed value clauses.
BODA now offers written valuation reports on member’s cars as a basis for agreement with their insurance companies.
Here are a couple of thoughts;
- Total loss. As an example if the ferry sank and no salvage were possible rebuild costs are irrelevant and market value should be considered and negotiated.
- Salvage rights. A car might be uneconomic to repair but nevertheless the owner might want to take the project on.
- Rebuild costs. Even the worst case of salvage in theory could be rebuilt. Witness the tool room copies of Bugatti Type 35’s produced over the past 20 years by Pur-Sang of Argentina. They cost £130,000 to £150,000 each and are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. As value soar owners need to be clear as to the terms of the contract they have with their insurers.
100% of our valuation reports for insurance purposes have been accepted by the insurance companies involved so far.
